About me

I’m Liis Peetermann, a third-year Tibetan Medicine student and an avid movement and mindfulness practitioner.

I’ve been deeply interested in nutrition, medicine, psychology and human anatomy for as long as I can remember. In 2018 while living in New York City I had my first appointment with a Tibetan Medicine doctor. Following his treatment suggestions tremendously improved my health and since then I’ve been personally following Tibetan Medicine guidelines to keep my body and mind in balance.

In 2021 I started studying Tibetan Medicine at Shang Shung Institute under my teacher Phuntsog Wangmo to deepen my knowledge in the diet and medicine field. I’m currently on the third year of the four and half year long program. Our studies are based on the classical Four Tantra books of Tibetan traditional curriculum. Currently I’m doing a practicum and offering Tibetan Medicine consultations accompanied with external therapies in Tallinn, Estonia.

I rely on my daily practice of loving kindness and compassion to offer a healing space for others. I truly wish all beings to be free of suffering.

The Main Principles of Tibetan Medicine

According to Tibetan Medicine the universe is composed of tiny particles combined of four elements - wind, fire, earth and water.

The fifth element - space - facilitates the base for all other elements. These elements combined produce the entire macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of living beings. Each body has its unique natural combination of the four elements. E.g. one person has a higher fire element and the other person has a higher wind element. This affects our personality and specificity of bodily processes, e.g. the speed of metabolism.

How does it translate into a medical system? According to Tibetan Medicine everything is a poison or a medicine. E.g. a nourishing and healing food at one occasion can become dangerous to one’s health in another occasion. Therefore the dietary aspect of Tibetan Medicine is a living and breathing practice where the healthy food choices are constantly changing - depending on the seasons, your mental and physical health and various other aspects. The same applies to choosing the most appropriate therapies, including massage. It’s important to understand your health imbalances before choosing the best therapy to accelerate the healing process.

Tibetan Medicine is thousands of years old highly scientific system that uses simple symbols and parallels to describe incredibly complex processes.

Wind element lung is our life force that is connected deeply with out inner energy (including thought energy) and the external air that we breathe. Wind is connected with all movement in the body. E.g. anxiety, which in its nature is an excess movement of though energy is the product of excess wind. The wind element is cold in its nature, therefore warming nutrition and therapies are used to bring the body back into its natural balance.

Wind

Earth and water element beken is responsible for maintaining the liquid and stabile components in the body, e.g. the lubrication of the cells and tissues, elasticity of connective tissue and mucus production in various processes. Strong sinusitis is often a symptom of the earth-water element being too high in the body. The earth-water element is cold in its nature, therefore warming nutrition and therapies are used to bring it back to its natural balance.

Earth & Water

Fire element tripa is responsible for all processes in the body that use heat. E.g. fire has strong importance in the digestive process where nutritional essence that our body needs is separated from the waste products. Many chronic illnesses are rooted in the digestive system being too cold. Fire also plays a role in various inflammations. The fire element is hot in its nature, therefore neutral and cool nutrition and therapies are used for lowering the heat.
